Why Is My Internet Slow on My PC? Wi-Fi, Ethernet, Ping and Packet-Loss Fixes

Separate download speed, latency and packet loss. Test one PC against another device before changing network settings or buying a gaming router.

Slow internet on a PC can mean low download speed, delayed website loading, high ping or packet loss. These are different symptoms. Start by comparing another device on the same connection and, if possible, comparing Wi-Fi with a direct Ethernet cable. That split is more useful than changing DNS, buying a router or applying a collection of network registry tweaks.

Know which number is actually bad

Also check units: a launcher reporting MB/s is showing megabytes, while broadband plans normally advertise megabits per second. Eight bits make one byte. File compression, server limits and protocol overhead mean the download display will not necessarily match a simple conversion of the advertised plan.

Find whether the problem is the PC or the connection

  1. Pause your own game downloads, cloud uploads and streaming temporarily. Do not disable security software.
  2. Compare two devices against the same test destination, one at a time and in the same location where practical.
  3. Test the PC over Ethernet directly to the router if available. Avoid changing multiple network devices during the comparison.
  4. Try a second website or download service. A single slow server is not evidence that the entire broadband connection is slow.
  5. Record whether the issue happens only at busy evening hours, only on Wi-Fi or only while someone uploads.

If only Wi-Fi is slow

Move closer to the router and compare again. Check whether the PC antenna is attached correctly and positioned away from an obstructing metal case. Test another supported band rather than assuming the newest band is always best through walls. Use the adapter or PC manufacturer’s driver, and try Windows’ Network and Internet troubleshooter in Get Help. Wi-Fi 7 is a wireless capability, not a guarantee of low internet latency.

If Ethernet is also slow

Check the negotiated link speed in the adapter’s status or Windows network properties. An unexpectedly slow link suggests checking the cable, ports and any dock or adapter in the path. Try a known-good cable and another LAN port. Restarting the router may help a connection problem, but it interrupts everyone using it; coordinate first and do not factory-reset it without its configuration and ISP details.

Use ping to narrow down the path

In Command Prompt, run ipconfig and find the Default Gateway for your active connection. Then run ping -n 30 followed by that gateway address. Compare with ping -n 30 1.1.1.1 as an external destination. These small tests measure replies along different paths; they are not a complete game-network benchmark. Repeat during the symptom and keep the results.

Unstable gateway replies suggest checking the local connection first. Stable local replies with poor external results point the investigation farther upstream, but do not identify a particular fault by themselves. Routers and destinations may limit or ignore ICMP replies. Loss at an intermediate hop alone is not proof that normal game traffic is being dropped; compare end-to-end symptoms and the game’s own network statistics.

High ping during downloads is not an FPS problem

If latency rises mainly while the connection is busy, queueing under load may be involved. Check the router’s documented traffic-management options and retest before buying hardware. Changing DNS generally affects name lookup, not the ongoing route to a game server. A VPN can change routing but may also add delay, so it is not a universal ping fix. Do not turn off the firewall to chase a score.

Continue with FPS and frame-time troubleshooting if the picture itself stutters.

What to send your ISP or support technician

Provide dates and times, wired-versus-wireless results, whether other devices are affected, your plan speed, and the destination tested. Hide public IP addresses and account details before posting screenshots publicly. A remote PC optimization cannot repair an ISP outage, a damaged cable or a distant overloaded game server.
