DX11 led every recorded FPS metric. It produced 14.5% more average FPS, 17.0% higher 1% lows, and 22.6% higher 0.1% lows in this comparison. If the decision were based only on these three numbers, Legacy Performance Mode would be the clear winner.
Why DX12 Can Feel Smoother Even With Lower FPS
An average, 1% low, or 0.1% low summarizes a distribution of frames. It does not show exactly when a hitch happened, whether several bad frames arrived together, or how predictable the frame delivery felt during a fight. In the observed gameplay, Legacy Performance Mode had one or two random drops even though its aggregate lows remained higher. DX12 ran at a lower overall frame rate but produced fewer noticeable interruptions.
That distinction matters: DX11 won the recorded FPS comparison, while DX12 won the subjective consistency observation on this particular system. A different GPU, driver, Windows build, Fortnite update, map area, or shader-cache state can change that balance.
What Are Fortnite's Two Performance Modes?
Epic introduced DirectX 12 Performance Mode with Fortnite v37.00. Use Legacy Performance Mode for Maximum FPS
Start with Legacy if you play competitively, your system can maintain a high frame rate, and your main goal is maximum FPS with the lowest-feeling delay. On the 9950X3D test system, this mode was ahead by 152.4 average FPS and also held the stronger low-FPS figures.
Use DX12 Performance Mode for Steadier-Feeling Gameplay
Start with DX12 Performance Mode if Legacy produces intermittent drops or if a lower but steadier-feeling frame rate matters more than the largest FPS counter. Do not assume DX12 will automatically be smoother on every PC. Compare it after its shader cache has had time to build.
Do Not Judge a Rendering Mode From the First Match
Fortnite uses different shader data for different rendering paths. When you switch modes, update the GPU driver, clear a shader cache, or install a major Fortnite update, the game may need to compile shaders again. Epic's own support documentation warns that the first match can still stutter while the client compiles new shaders.
- Select one Performance Mode and restart Fortnite when prompted.

How to Enable DX11 Legacy Performance Mode in Fortnite
Use Fortnite's Epic Games Launcher command-line field to force the DX11 rendering path. This is the setup used for the Legacy Performance Mode result in our comparison.
- Close Fortnite completely.
- Open the Epic Games Launcher.
- Click your profile icon in the upper-right corner, then select Settings.
- Scroll down to the Fortnite section and expand it.
- Enable Additional Command Line Arguments.
- Enter -d3d11 into the command-line field exactly as shown.
- Launch Fortnite, open Video settings, and select Legacy Performance Mode if the rendering-mode option is shown.
- Apply the setting and restart Fortnite before testing.

To stop forcing DX11, close Fortnite, return to the same launcher setting, remove -d3d11, and leave the command-line field blank. Then select DX12 Performance Mode in Fortnite and restart the game.

If Both Modes Still Stutter or Drop FPS
Rendering mode is only one layer of Fortnite performance. Persistent drops can come from an unstable CPU or memory tune, incorrect dual-CCD scheduling, shader recompilation, thermal limits, GPU-driver problems, background recording, replay capture, a poor frame cap, or Windows settings. Switching DirectX versions will not repair those underlying problems.
